SOULMATES MUSIC FOR CELLO CLARINET AND PIANO

Before string quartets and wind ensembles flourished in the Classical era, aristocratic households turned to consorts of viols (an early version of string instruments) to enliven their social gatherings. Consorts, or chamber music ensembles, embodied the spirit of musical democracy: No one voice dominated the texture of shared musical utterance. In eighteenth-century Vienna, patrons enjoyed a regular supply of newly minted quartets and wind ensembles for their nocturnal gatherings in a style that continued the democratic spirit of consorts and came to be known as the music of friends. Mozart penned many works in this style, calling upon some of the city’s prominent virtuosi as partners. In collaboration with the standout clarinetist Anton Stadler, team Mozart/Stadler urged instrument makers to upgrade the clarinet’s technical features and give access to its haunting lowest register, the chalumeau. Their efforts prepared the clarinet for its first prominence in the music of friends.

BRAHMS THE THREE PIANO TRIOS

The composer’s presence at the keyboard for each of the trio’s earliest performances underscores their purpose: a means for companionship, musical pleasure, and deep joy. They invite us to enter a Brahmsian world designed for everyone, for amateurs and professionals, filled with generous emotion.

THE ST PETERSBURG SCHOOL MUSIC FOR CELLO AND PIANO

The St. Petersburg School – Music for Cello. In the St. Petersburg project, Vardi researched, performed, and recorded (with pianist Uriel Tsachor), compositions written by Russian-Jewish composers, many of which had never been previously recorded. In 1977 Beth Hatfutzot (the Diaspora Museum in Tel Aviv) released the recording on a CD, which was favorably reviewed by the Jerusalem Post.

The St. Petersburg School, or as it was officially called: the Society for Jewish Folk Music, was Founded in 1908. It collected thousands of recordings of Jewish folk melodies and supported new compositions from Jewish musicians based upon or inspired by their Jewish musical heritage.

The society's early prominent members included Lazare Saminsky, Efrayim Shkliar, Solomon Rosowsky, Aleksandr Krein, Mikhail Gnesin, and Joseph Achron. Its activity comprised four main areas: research, composition, performance, and publishing.
